Nina Simone Birthday Tribute — Chris Devoe

A Birthday Tribute to Nina Simone

She was one of the most extraordinary artists of the twentieth century, an icon of American music. She was the consummate musical storyteller, a griot as she would come to learn, who used her remarkable talent to create a legacy of liberation, empowerment, passion, and love through a magnificent body of works. She earned the moniker ‘High Priestess of Soul’ for she could weave a spell so seductive and hypnotic that the listener lost track of time and space as they became absorbed in the moment. She was who the world would come to know as Nina Simone.

Join us as we explore her discography from the debut album Little Girl Blue (1959)  to her final release A Single Woman (1993).

Movie Night at Commune

Steve McQueen Lover’s Rock

Suffused with the intoxicating sounds of reggae, dub, and Lovers Rock, the second installment in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series unfolds over the course of one rapturous night into dawn in early-1980s West London, as a young woman (the luminous Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn) sneaks out to attend a house party. As the alternately languorous and ecstatic rhythms pulse from a homemade sound system, romance sparks on the dance floor, small human dramas play out, and, for a moment, this gathering is a safe haven from the outside world. Aided by the sensuous cinematography of Shabier Kirchner, McQueen captures an exhilarating expression of Black joy in a society often intent on stifling it.

Lisa Cortés — Little Richard: I Am Everything

This documentary tells the story of the Black queer origins of rock n' roll, exploding the whitewashed canon of American pop music to reveal the innovator -- the originator -- Richard Penniman. Through a wealth of archive and performance that brings us into Richard's complicated inner world, the film unspools the icon's life story with all its switchbacks and contradictions. In interviews with family, musicians, and cutting-edge Black and queer scholars, the film reveals how Richard created an art form for ultimate self-expression, yet what he gave to the world he was never able to give to himself. Throughout his life, Richard careened like a shiny cracked pinball between God, sex and rock n' roll.

Muse – Late Night Tea

About Muse —

The space between what was, and what could be.

No big sign. No scripted greeting. Just a subtle glow at the edge of night and the new year, quietly pulling you in.

This is Muse Late Night Tea: a Muse’s version of a night cap as monthly late night tea pop-up that leaves the usual social cues outside and invites you to settle into something a little less predictable.

And the teas? They’re not just a menu—they’re small acts of rebellion. Herbal and cardamom blends that cut through the dark, floral infusions that ask you to slow down, sip, and notice what’s right in front of you.

No one’s rushing. Voices stay low, the night feels long, and you can just be. This isn’t about putting on a show. It’s about tasting connection on your own terms, rethinking what a late-night gathering can mean, and savoring the space between what was and what could be.

Tormento — Alix Brown

Listen to –

A playlist by international DJ Alix Brown plus a listen of her new release, a collaboration with Louis Fontaine and Margo Fortuny. We’ll have the 7” single for sale. Alix will not be here, but with us in spirit.

“ Imagine a nocturnal rendezvous between the lyrical playfulness of Serge Gainsbourg and the infectious yet smooth danceability of Daft Punk. Tormento is a sexy soft disco odyssey that weaves a contemporary fantasy where dilemmas and desires—torments of the heart and flesh—are bathed in the sultry glow of classic erotic cinema.

Recorded in Los Angeles and Paris, the song is a collaborative effort between composer and multi-instrumentalist Louis Fontaine, DJ and music supervisor Alix Brown, and lyricist and writer Margo Fortuny. This sonic tale of longing and uncertainty, ignited by the trio's shared love for 1970s sounds, cinema, and style, draws inspiration from the cinematic soundscapes of François de Roubaix and from French and Italian chanson.”
